Google Brings Back the Old Weather Cards

Back in January, Google redesigned the weather card for mobile. Now the old interface is back, but it's not clear if this is a bug or Googlers realized that the redesigned card wasn't good enough.

Google's attempt to build an even more powerful web application for weather brought some new information (air quality, UV index, sunrise and sunset times), but also a few extra taps. For example, you had to tap the "10 days" tab to see the forecast for the next 10 days.

Here's a screenshot of the ill-fated redesign:

  4. New cards still here too (South Korea). I wish they'd go back to the old ones. If I wanted a goofy childish weather widget I'd use one of the millions available in the Play Store. Google Now is meant to be streamlined and predictive. I hate waiting the extra two seconds it takes to load the more detailed forecast now. It's also confusing to read at a glance.

I greatly prefer the weather display in the "Google News and Weather" app. Very simple, click the day, get a simple graph forecast for temperature, rain, etc. Google Now should incorporate that style (along with its handling of news articles that I can save for later, not just read now-or-never).

  5. I found the old card to be much quicker to load and responsive. The new card for a while didn't load at all for me and it's slow to scroll through it. I wonder if Card performance is the issue.

  6. I think redsigns like this are the result of Google having too many developers and designers. So they have to do something/anything to keep themselves and their managers busy and employed. So, they tinker much too frequently with already excellent and well received designs. It's very annoying.

  7. Today I got a little notification at the bottom of my Google Now asking if I'd like to make 'Weather' into a shortcut on my phone, so it's now sitting pretty on my phone. (UK)
